Choosing the Right Glazing Solutions for You

Glass is an essential building material that is a large contributing factor to comfort from within the home.

At Stirling Glass, we pride ourselves on our ability to assist you in choosing the correct glass for your application. We can assist in ensuring your glass works for your home. Whether you're insulating from temperature extremes or controlling the passage of light and heat into and out of your home, we can provide advice on the correct glass.

There are three main areas to consider when thinking about windows, doors and glazing for your project: natural light, solar heat gain and thermal conductivity.

Glass Repairs

Broken glass in the home, office or anywhere is not only dangerous but also can be very distressing if it is the result of a break-in. We provide quick and affordable installation of various types of glass to both commercial and domestic markets.

Glass Processing

At Stirling Glass + Aluminium, we have our own glass processing facilities comprising of Bevelling, Flat polishing, tempering, and cutting on a water jet.

Bevelling

Single Bevel – A specific angle ranging between 45 degrees and 87 degrees is ground off the surface of the glass or mirror. This angle is dependent on the thickness, the edge remaining, and the width of the bevel. By varying any of these elements, we can create a very elegant-looking piece. We have the capability of bevelling up to 25mm thick glass and a maximum of 3mts long.

Double bevel glass – The same as bevel, except that we run the glass through the machine two times resulting in a double bevel. Each time that the glass passes through the machine, the grinding wheels are positioned at a slightly different angle. We can disengage the polishing wheels on one of the bevels, thereby creating a unique white frosted look.

Straight Line Flat Polisher

The flat polished edge is our most popular edge. It is a very simple, very refined look. The edge is flat with the upper and lower part having a small highly polished chamfer.

We have the capability of flat polishing up to 25mm thick glass and a maximum of 3mts long.

Tempered Glass / Toughened Glass

It begins as ordinary annealed glass; it is cut to the exact, finished size, drilled and shaped and then uniformly heated to 600°C, then cooled rapidly by blowing air on both sides. After toughening, the glass can have up to 5 times its original strength. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt fragments not the large sharp shards of regular glass, reducing the risk of serious injury. Typically when broken, the whole pane crazes and falls out in pieces. Toughened glass products cannot be cut, drilled or shaped – all such work must be completed before toughening is carried out.

Here at Stirling Glass & Aluminium, we are able to toughen glass panels as large as 2100mm x 3000mm or as small as 150mm x 300mm.

Water Jet

The high-pressure water jet is used as a tool to cut a wide range of materials and shapes. The intensifier pump pushes a water jet at very high pressure the cutting head moves by the CNC control system. The water is ejected through a gauged orifice mixed with an abrasive to cut any shape and materials.

Our capacity is 1970mmx3600mm sheet of material.

Double Glazing

Technological advances in the last 25 years have made it possible to design windows that insulate against heat and cold up to four times better than conventional windows.

An energy-efficient window is one that helps to minimise the use of artificial heating and cooling in a building. In many parts of Australia, the priority is to keep solar heat out of the home, except during colder months, when ‘free’ solar heat gain and retention of warmth in the house become important.

Heat gain or heat loss takes three forms:

  • Radiant heat transfer,
  • Conductive heat transfer and
  • Heat transfer via air infiltration.

Ideally, strong solar protection on east and west windows, but deliberate use of free sunlight (via clear glass) from northerly windows. This means different window solutions for different orientations. Alternatively, it is possible to use the same uniform high-performance window type on all sides of a home – provided it is correctly chosen. From an energy point of view, this is not quite optimal, but it simplifies the specification process and still results in very substantial energy savings and improved comfort compared to using clear single-glazed windows.
